I have had Granny for 1 1/2 years now and she is going through the final stages of kidney failure. When I adopted her I knew this was in her future and I am very grateful I got to spend the last years of her life with her. I would like some good to come out of her death so if I can convince one person to adopt a special needs dog her death will have some meaning. So here goes Granny, this one's for you.

Most of us think of a special needs dog and say "I don't have the time" or "I don't want a dog that is just going to die soon". Well, that's not necessarily true. They might just need an extra cuddle or two and most of them live a lot longer than you think. Just remember, that young, healthy dog you have could suddenly have an accident or get some mysterious illness. There are no guarantees in life. The unexpected sometimes happens so give your dog an extra hug and take the time to appreciate him today.

A special needs dog could just be a dog that needs to live with another greyhound. There are some extra shy dogs out there who need the confidence they can only get from another hound. They need a family that has some patience and is willing to socialize them. Not very time consuming and believe me, these dogs bond to you like super glue.

There are also the older dogs from 8-12 years old. Most people balk at this because they think the dogs are going to die too soon. Let's remember these guys can live up to 15 and I can't think of anything more rewarding than making the last years of a dog's life the best that they can be.

Occasionally we get dogs that aren't in the best of health. These hounds do require more medical attention but believe me they are worth it. I would much rather spend my money on someone who appreciates me and unconditionally loves me than on inanimate objects that just sit there.

If you have a little extra room in your home and in your heart please consider these dogs. I have to admit there is a certain gratification in knowing that I am the only one who could ever take care of Granny. I know that most people would have given up on her long ago, but look at all they would have missed. Just one look from Granny and I know it is all worth it. So ask yourself, "Are you that extra special family that these dogs so desperately need?" Can you open your heart just a little bit so you can be rewarded with undying love? I have done it and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
